LEIMERT PARK - Councilmember Bernard C. Parks and his wife, Bobbie Parks kicked off the holiday season in South Los Angeles with the annual tree lighting ceremony and holiday concert in Leimert Park on Monday evening. Now in its ninth year, the event has become a beloved tradition in the community since Parks first organized the celebration during his first year in office.

“With the dismal state of the economy in these challenging times, it’s so nice to come together as a community for a fun evening of celebration and entertainment that’s free and open to everyone,” Parks said.
Adai Lamar of Radio Free 102.3 FM KJLH served as emcee, with performances by Tameca DeVant, Chris Lyric, Zeia King, Ochi Charter School Cheerleaders, Asia Shabazz, Deshaude, and the Greater LA Cathedral Choir. The entertainment was produced by Randy Hankins of The school Tour.
Numerous civic and community leaders were present, including Councilwoman Jan Perry, Senator Curren Price, Brenda Shockley – President, Community Build, Jackie Ryan – President, Leimert Park Merchants Association, Bobbie Jean Anderson – Vice Chair, Los Angeles County Democratic Party, Robert Rubin – Executive Director, Vermont Village Community Development Corporation and Madeline Cobb – Board Member, NAMI Urban Los Angeles.
Department of Water and Power employees worked throughout the day to set up the lights and electrical connections, and joined Parks in flipping the switch to light up Leimert Park. Additional logistical support was provided by LAPD, LAFD, General Services Department, Department of Recreation and Parks, Bureau of Street Services, and Bureau of Sanitation.
